From Jolinda Hackett, your Guide to Vegetarian Food
Beers and carbs and hours of sitting in front of the TV? Yes, please (even though the 49ers should be there!). I'll worry about running a 5k tomorrow to work it all off. Enjoy your game day, whether you choose classic snacks or some of the lighter options below.

Lighter Super Bowl fare
Vegetarian Superbowl snacks should be quick and easy to prepare so that you can spend time enjoying the game, or screaming at the TV, depending on who's winning. If you'd rather eat on the light side and pass up the wings, here's a few lighter snacks that are still absolutely munch-able:
  • Apple and soy nut butter pita pockets
  • Toasted pita chips with edamame hummus (Pictured, left)
  • Stuffed mushrooms with walnut pate
  • Vegetarian mini-meatballs. Not worried about your health? This chili bean and cheese dip is full of tasty, salty processed cheese- and it's absolutely delicious. Try it!

  • Classic game day mini meatballs
For a quick and easy Super Bowl snack idea, use store-bought meat substitutes to shape some quick and easy vegetarian meatballs. Here's a few recipes to try:
  • Vegetarian meatballs
  • Mini meatballs in red currant jelly sauce
  • Gardein mini-meatballs in tomato sauce (pictured)

  • Seven Layer Dips
Combine all of the best Mexican flavors onto one plate and call it seven layer dip, even if you choose to layer six or even eight ingredients, who's counting? Try some of these easy vegetarian seven layer dip recipes, pick up some chips, and turn on the game and enjoy your vegetarian Super Bowl munchies. Vegetarian Seven Layer Dips:
  • Vegetarian Seven Layer Dip with Mock Meat (pictured) Season some mock meat crumbles with chili powder for a seven layer dip with a meaty texture.
  • Vegan 7 Layer Dip Tofutti vegan cream cheese forms the bottom layer of this vegan Mexican dip.
  • Quick and Easy Vegetarian Seven Layer Dip Taco seasoning adds extra spice to this quick and easy recipe.
  • 7 Layer Dip for Kids Use a mild chili powder and salsa to make this snack for the kids.

  • Bean dip, 11 ways
When I used to work on the road, bean dip was always a favorite midnight snack for my fellow vegans and I, because it was something vegan we could find even in the middle of nowhere. We justified eating bean dip out of a can at 2 AM by telling ourselves it was healthier than eating chips or candy or whatever other munchies the 24 hour mini-marts in Nebraska stocked (incidentally, I've put together a list of travel tips for vegetarians to make sure this doesn't happen to you). But I digress. These days, I prefer to make my own homemade bean dip, and I recommend you avoid the sodium-laden canned stuff and make your own as well. It's quite easy, and even the laziest Super Bowl party host can pop open some beans and add some salsa and cheese. Here are eleven vegetarian bean dip recipes to choose from for your vegetarian or vegan Super Bowl party. Enjoy!
