In the past 10 months, protests in Mexico City have increased in number and violence. ARTICLE 19 criticises Brazil’s criminalisation of expression at Inter-American Commission

This week, ARTICLE 19 raised Brazil’s continued breach of regional freedom of expression standards at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. ARTICLE 19 has urged the Commission to condemn under Article 13 of the American Convention on Human Rights, Brazil’s so-called “honour crimes” of slander and libel, and contempt, all provided for in the country’s penal code. Read more >

UK: ARTICLE 19 joins call on government to drop proposed FOI restrictions

ARTICLE 19 has joined 76 campaign groups, charities and press bodies who have written to the prime minister urging him to drop proposals to restrict the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. They say the proposals are not compatible with the prime minister’s stated aim of making the UK “the most open and transparent government in the world”. Read more >

UK: Civil Society concerns about mass surveillance

Secret mass surveillance is a threat to democracy and the rule of law. If we are unable to know about the extent of government surveillance, we are unable to protect our fundamental rights.
