Police in US and Canada are investigating if the leaks of Ashley Madison may have led to several suicides, including a police captain in Texas. Bryce Evans, acting staff superintendent for the Toronto Police, spoke of “two unconfirmed reports of suicides associated with the leak of Ashley Madison’s customers’ profiles” during a Monday press conference.
It is unclear if this number included a Texas police captain who committed suicide just days after his email address was released in the massive data leak of adultery website Ashley Madison. It was confirmed on Monday that San Antonio Police Captain Michael Gorhum shot and killed himself last week.
Gorhum, a 25-year veteran of the department who oversaw the San Antonio Regional Intelligence Center Unit, was reportedly one of three San Antonio city email addresses included in the information dump, according to local media.
However, it has not been confirmed whether his death was linked to the cheating website leak.
Although it did not publish names, the San Antonio Express-News reported on Friday that three addresses ending in @sanantonio.gov were included in the hack, stating that they belonged to a San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) captain, an SAPD detective, and a former city employee.
He confirmed that Ashley Madison’s parent company, Toronto-based Avid Life Media, is offering a “$500,000 reward to anyone providing information that leads to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the leak of the Ashley Madison database.”
Also on Monday, Canada’s privacy watchdog announced it will investigate the security breach into Ashley Madison, which exposed details of 37 million accounts.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner “has commenced an investigation into the matter concerning Avid Life Media,” spokesperson Valerie Lawton told the Toronto Star.
She added that the Office will be “investigating jointly with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and in cooperation with other international counterparts,” but declined to provide additional details due to confidentiality provisions.
Avid Life Media is currently facing a national class action lawsuit of $760 million from Ashley Madison’s Canadian customers.
The plaintiffs are “outraged that AshleyMadison.com failed to protect its users’ information,” law firms Charney Lawyers and Sutts, Strosberg LLP said in a statement, adding that many customers “paid an additional fee for the website to remove all of their user data, only to discover that the information was left intact and exposed.”

NASA employees were caught buying child pornography from a criminal ring in Eastern Europe that distributed images of minors as young as three, it can be revealed. An investigation by Daily Mail Online found 16 staff members from the space agency paid for pictures and videos of children in sexual situations, but were never prosecuted.
Their names have never been released because of government guidelines which protect their privacy – prompting fears some of the culprits are still employed by NASA. The probe found that in 2010, the employees paid for the pornography using personal credit cards or PayPal while working for the government.
Their actions were uncovered during Project Flicker – an investigation by the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into American citizens buying child pornography from Belarus and Ukraine.
The investigation began in 2007 when more than 33,000 images of minors being abused flooded into the country.
Investigators identified more than 5,200 citizens across the country who had paid for a subscription to illicit websites in order to access the content.
In 2010 it was revealed that 264 of these worked for the Pentagon as either employees or contractors. Some of them worked for the NSA and had top security clearance.
But the Daily Mail Online can reveal for the first time that NASA employees were also identified in the sickening scheme in the same year.

politwoops-2015-06-04-01Twitter has shut down a network of sites dedicated to archiving deleted tweets from politicians around the world. The sites — collectively known as Politwoops — were overseen by the Open State Foundation (OSF), which reported that Twitter suspended their API access on Friday, August 21st. Twitter reportedly told the OSF that its decision was the result of “thoughtful internal deliberation and close consideration of a number of factors,” and that the social media site didn’t distinguish between politicians and regular users.
“Imagine how nerve-racking — terrifying, even — tweeting would be if it was immutable and irrevocable?” Twitter reportedly told the OSF. “No one user is more deserving of that ability than another. Indeed, deleting a tweet is an expression of the user’s voice.”
The US arm of Politwoops was shut down in June this year, but this new decision affects countries all over the world including Canada, Egypt, India, Ireland, South Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, Norway, and the UK. The Diplotwoops site, dedicated to archiving deleted tweets from diplomats, was also shut down.

A view shows figures carved into the facade of the New York Stock Exchange in New York
US stocks closed with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 588 points, recovering from the shocking plunge of 1,000 points at the opening bell on Monday. The S&P 500 was down over 77 points as the trading stopped on the busiest day of the year for investors. Wall Street suffered one of the steepest falls in the last four years. The volatile session saw the main indexes plunge by 5 percent during the day before correcting and closing down nearly 4 percent.
The Dow opened with a stomach-churning 1,000-point plunge following world market panic and the biggest Chinese stock slide since 2007. More than 2,000 stocks hit new 52 week lows on Monday, according to the WSJ Market Data Group. Nasdaq saw Apple fall as low as $92. Giants such as Chevron, General Electric, Berkshire Hathaway and PepsiCo have seen their lowest stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange in a year.
The Dow’s 588 points loss corresponded to a 3.6 percent decline while the S&P 500’s 77 points drop corresponds to a 3.9 percent loss. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day with a 3.8 percent drop, down nearly 180 points.
According to preliminary data from BATS Global Markets, the US equities market operator, nearly 1,300 trading halts were recorded on US exchanges on Monday.
Though the Dow percentage change may not be dramatic, the 588 point drop is the eighth-biggest intraday point decline in the Dow’s history while the 1,000-point decline at the open is the largest intraday point decline in history.
The US stock chaos followed the crash of the world markets on Monday, after the Shanghai composite closed down 8.5 percent. Asian markets followed China with a broad sell-off. Europe mirrored the downtrend, with the STOXX Europe 600 Index dropping 5.3 percent – its worst percentage loss since 2008.

Police in Boston have said they thwarted a potential massacre at the Pokemon World Championship. Security forces detained James Austin Stumbo, 27, and Kevin Norton, 18, for “threats of violence made over social media,” as they attempted to gain entry to the contest on Thursday.
A day later, police secured a warrant to search the men’s car parked a few blocks from the event. They found weapons in the vehicle: a shotgun, AR-15 assault rifle, a hunting rifle, and 250 rounds of ammunition. Stumbo and Norton had no license to hold firearms.
The two men, from Iowa, were arrested on Saturday at a motel in Saugus, Massachusetts, and now face charges for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
The search and arrest came after Stumbo and Norton posted a picture of their car and weapons in a Facebook group called “Mayhem Pokemon Crew” (the post has now been taken down).
The caption to the post read, “Kevin Norton and I are ready for Worlds Boston here we come!!!”
One of users in the group, Joey Faux, wrote, “Good luck!” in response, to which Norton replied, “With killing the competition?”
“Haha, yes,” Faux said.
The police were informed by Facebook users and the Pokemon International Company about the post.
“This incident is a good example of private security reaching out to their local Boston police district and relaying information to detectives and BRIC (Boston Regional Intelligence Center) analysts in order to identify the very real threat. The BPD detectives did a great job in the stop and prevention of a potential tragedy,” Superintendent Paul Fitzgerald said, as cited in the official statement by Boston Police Department.
The Pokemon International Company issued their statement on Sunday, saying they had been tipped off by their members about the threats.
“Prior to the event this weekend, our community of players made us aware of a security issue. We gathered information and gave it as soon as possible to the authorities at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center, who acted swiftly and spearheaded communication with the Boston Police Department,” the company said.
The “potential threat” was tackled due to “quick action,” they added.
The 12th Pokemon World Championship invited hundreds of gamers from 30 countries to take part, with winners earning thousands of dollars in prize money.
